Thank you for a great week of aquaponics. I am still excited and ready to start a project. Jaime is a thorough instructor. His enthusiasm is contagious, he is patient, and obviously has vast knowledge of aquaponics and its’ applications. I look forward to getting together with him here in Cape Coral. I would have enjoyed to attend for the whole month. I will stop by with my family and interested friends when I am in the area.

MSF participates in the 2012 Spring Sustainability and Natural Foods Gala

Morning Star Fishermen had an opportunity to share our passion for sustainable farming last weekend at the Crones Cradle Conserve’s Spring Sustainability and Natural Foods Gala. The event was a chance for local sustainable businesses and farmers to get together and showcase their products and ideas which included everything from quilting to blacksmithing to fish farming. Crone’s Cradle Conserve located in Citra Florida, is an ecological preserve as well as an organic farm. They host several events a year and provide several workshops designed to teach people how to do their own organic gardening and to be more sustainable.

Trash Mountain Project completes their 5-day training

How would your life be different if you knew that your left over food would become the next meal for someone in poverty? Or that your trash will be reclaimed by an orphan who has nothing? This is the reality for so many impoverished people around the world who have made city landfills their home. They depend on the trash and waste that comes from people just like you and me.

Trash Mountain Project brings children and families who live in these trash dump communities into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ by addressing their spiritual, physical, emotional, and educational needs. Shortly after a mission trip to a landfill community in Honduras, Brett Durbin founded Trash Mountain, where they are already making a difference in three corners of the globe: Cambodia, the Dominican Republic and Honduras.

With aid from Kids with a Hope Ministries, Trash Mountain Santiago is building an infrastructure of educational, medicinal and provisional support for this landfill community. Kids with a Hope began with the prison ministry of Pastor Pablo Urena were he learned about the number of families taking refuge in the refuse Beginning with a simple phone call to Trash Mountain Project is all that it took for Brett and his team to take root in Santiago, and begin bringing hope to these children and families.

Currently, Trash Mountain has been honing its mission to bring sustainable food to this community. Dr. Brent Nichols, the chief research developer and biologists for Trash Mountain, Nathan Downs, a youth pastor from Englewood, Florida and Chris Mammoliti, a fisheries biologist from Topeka, Kansas recently took the five-day aquaponics training course at Morning Star Fishermen. Here they learned the skills and techniques needed to manage their own aquaponic facility in Topeka which they will start construction on in May of 2012. Once the system in Topeka is constructed, Chris and Nathan will spend the next year learning, experimenting and training others how to operate the system Once they complete a year learning and experimenting with their own design they have plans to implement the same system in the Dominican Republic.

EMI comes to MSF

Rex Barber came to Morning Star Fishermen after hearing about us through two previous alumni from Nigeria. Rex, an architect by trade is also the team leader for a missionary group called Engineering Ministries International. Engineering Ministries International (EMI) is a non-profit Christian development organization made up of architects, engineers and design professionals who donate their skills to help children and families around the world step out of poverty and into a world of hope. This group takes individuals with architecture and engineering backgrounds on short term mission trips to help developing countries. So far they have been to over 80 different countries and have helped design and build schools, hospitals, clinics, clean water systems and orphanages just to name a few.

Rex, from EMI who also grew up as a farm boy in Kansas has a desire to learn aquaponics so he can go out and teach others to be more sustainable. Rex’s ultimate goal is to see aquaponics incorporated into their current ministry as a way to provide a sustainable food source to the clinics, hospitals, and schools they help build.

When asked about his experience of the 5 day class he recently attended, Rex replied “I thought the class was very good. This is exactly what I was looking for. I am walking away with the information I needed to build my own system. This for me was a great next step.”

WOW, what an amazing week we spent with MorningstarFishermen! Jaime’s knowledge and ability to troubleshoot and develop anaquaponic system from a conceptual drawing is phenomenal. We are so glad thatwe chose to spend our time and resources with Morningstar Fishermen and arevery hopeful for the future and developing a lasting relationship between ourtwo organizations. I could feel the synergy all week.

I can’t even begin to express how great the experience was at morningstar.

The classes were very helpful and the people that I have met,I will remember for life.

Guatemala Fish Farm Underway!!

An email from Jim Feldman an Alumni of Morning Star Fishermen.

Hi,

I’ll be leaving for Guatemala Mar 24th and our goal is to finish the fish farm we started in January. I’ve attached a few pictures to give you an idea of where we are. We have raised the funds to complete the project with the Lord’s blessing and generous people. I’ve modeled our setup similar to the tank you have down from the main system. Our’s is 24′ X 60′ and 5 block high with 6 divisions. I’ve got a few questions because I’m uncertain about some things and need your help.

I thank you for your help on this. I’m a little nervous about this project. The people in Guatemala are counting on us for food and a little income, we have had some generous contributors, my own confidence is shaky, so needless to say, with prayer, advice from you all, and prayer, the blessing of so many people, and prayer, we have to succeed. Thanks again for everything.

By the way, we call the project “The Galilee Project”
